As a young girl I always thought that I would meet a Prince Charming someday who would bend on his knee and ask me to marry him in public. A diamond ring and a bouquet of red rose would also be appreciated. The audience would clap for us and the girls would be jealous. Now that I have grown-up I have realized that this is not possible- in India! Love in the age of religious groups and politics is bitterer than ever before.
A young Muslim couple in Maharashtra had to pay a big price for a simple expression of love in public. When the young man from Bhiwandi got down on his knees in the middle of the street to propose his girlfriend, little did he know that it would annoy the local leaders of the community. Amidst a cheering and clapping audience someone took a picture of the guy proposing his burkha clad lady love and hugging her and uploaded it on the social media.
The National Lokhind Party and the Raza Academy have accused the young couple of acting the Islamic religious principles and claimed that they would make the couple do squats in public. The groups have also promised that they would take legal action against the couple for stopping the traffic.
The guy, fed up of all that his and the girl’s family had to go through because of the incident, posted a public apology. He said that he alone is to be blamed for the ‘mistake’ and it is not fair to punish someone else for his mistake. He also revealed that he was about to get married to the girl with the consent of both their families on March 11. The girl’s father also filed a police complaint against both the groups for threatening his daughter. He said that his daughter has threatened to commit suicide if the threatening does not stop.
The couple, concerned about their life and safety, have temporarily moved away from the city.
