Mumbai: Exploiting the guilty’s family for financial benefits, a man was arrested by Nagpada police in Mumbai last week for extorting money from the family of gang-rape convicts.
The family of Julfikar and Parvez, who had been convicted of raping a Nepali woman in December 2012, faced menacing calls from one Mr. Mohammad Rustam, who brandished empty threats of police connections to the victim family. Rustam, reportedly, said that if the family didn’t give him money, he would use his police connections to increase the punishment of the accused in the gang-rape.
He also assured of getting them released early if the family met his demands.
Blinded by emotions, the family is learnt to have given Rustam Rs 10,000 in cash, with another installment of Rs 10,000 promised to be delivered on Saturday.
But when their saw no change in status of their son’s imprisonment, the family realised that they had been duped. Thus, they filed a complaint on Saturday
“Iskramuddin filed a complaint on Saturday morning after which we asked him to call Rustam to Arabia restaurant,” We were successful in arresting the accused and have also recovered Rs 10,000 paid as first installment,” Senior Police Inspector Vinayak Savade from Nagpada police station told English daily.
