While miniscule details about Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor in the 26/11 terror attacks, remain talk of the town, here are some of the unknown facts:
Upbeat till the end
Ajmal Kasab was in a cheerful mood till the officials came to take him to the gallows. He greeted the officials in a reposeful tone and moved towards the area where execution was supposed to take place. According to the reports, his last words were “Allah-kasam mujhe maaf kar do, aisi galti dubara nahi hogi”. He did not shed a single tear during his last days.
Kasab’s last wish
He wanted to meet his family members, as his last wish. However, the officials had reportedly informed him that they did not receive any response from the Pakistani government about his execution.
His last feast
He wanted to munch a few tomatoes early morning and was offered a basket full of it. According to a source, he consumed only one tomato at around 06 am in the morning.
Rope for hanging Ajmal Kasab was weaved in Bihar jail
The rope which was originally meant to hang Afjal Guru, was used for Kasab’s execution. It was weaved by the jail prisoners in Buxar central jail(Bihar).
According to a source, “The rope was supplied in an anticipation that 2001 parliament attacker would be hanged. However, his execution was deferred and it was then used for Kasab”.
Who were aware of Operation X
To keep the mission top-secret, only a handlful of the officials were informed about Kasab’s execution. In the list were: Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Home Secretary RK Singh, few officials in the Maharashtra government. Maharashtra CM Prithivraj Chavan, his deputy R R Patil, Maharashtra DGP Dayal, Maharashtra Chief Secretary J K Banthia, State Home Secretary Amitabh Rajan and his aide, Principal Secretary in charge of jail, Medha Gadgil. Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh, Meeran Borwankar, who heads the Yerwada Central Jail, and those at the helm in the state intelligence department and Mumbai CID, as informed by the sources.
Who were not informed
The officials could smell something fishy due to the movements. However, no official at the Yeravada jail in Pune could decipher that Kasab had been moved from Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail to their jurisdiction, according to the report by an English daily.
Even the hangman was not informed about the identity of Kasab. Officials from Indo-Tibetan Border Police guarding the jail in Mumbai, were kept uninformed until the day he was to be shifted. Even after he was shifted the guards were kept outside the premises lest anyone could suspect his movement.
