Pune: A major fire broke out at MIDC Bhosari-based Suraj Coats paint company gutting the entire factory on Tuesday evening. Although no life was lost in the fire, the damage has been estimated to the tune of Rs 3.5 crore.
The company, which supplied industrial paints to various companies in MIDC Bhosari, was completely burnt in the fire which raged for over an hour.
According to fire brigade officials of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the presence of highly inflammable thinners and paints made it difficult for the fire to be brought under control.
Kiran Gawde, fire officer of PCMC, said the incident could have resulted in a big disaster. “Since the chemicals were on fire, it was difficult to control the fire. We had to use foam technology to control the fire,’’ he said.
The owner of the company, Abasaheb Borade, said “The employees evacuated the building as soon as smoke started billowing and we were spraying water to ensure that the fire does not spread to the neighbouring companies.’’
PCMC mayor Mohini Lande and the head of the disaster management cell Omprakash Bahiwal visited the area.
