Pune: ‘Ajoba’ is an upcoming Marathi film, directed by Sujoy Dahake and is based on a true story of a leopard’s fascinating journey from Pune to Mumbai. The writer of the film is Gauri Bapat and Urmila Matondkar is playing a wildlife biologist in the film.
The film is a depiction of the 120 km and 29-day journey of a leopard from Malshej Ghats in Pune to Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai. The film shows the problems that the leopard suffered during the journey. The journey dates back to 2009 when a leopard fell into a well in a small village of Junnar in Maharashtra and was later rescued by the forest officials. A wildlife biologist Purva Roy reached there and named the leopard ‘Ajoba’ (Means ‘dada’). She attached a collar with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device around the leopard’s neck.
Ajoba crossed Malshej Ghat, Ajoba Peak, Ratangad, Kasara Railway Station, Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, Wada, Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, Navghar, Vasai Industrial area and Nagla Block in Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
The readings of the leopard’s position were stored in the collar and transmitted via SMS to the server whenever the animal reached an area that had mobile connectivity. The device costs around Rs 2 lakh. The tracking device, however, malfunctioned after four months. Ajoba was last seen at the National Park in 2009.
It is said that Ajoba died in 2011 after he collided with a truck. The post mortem report said that the death was caused by serious injuries on its chest.
Apart from Urmila Matondkar, the film features Yashpal Sharma, Rishikesh Joshi, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Srikant Yadav in main roles. The film is low-budget and Urmila agreed to work in the film in a nominam amount.
