Pune:Ani Choying Dolma sings Buddhist hymns and sings them with her heart. In the process the enormous following that the Nepalese nun has gathered, has made many compare her to the renowned US pop singer Lady Gaga.
She indeed has been dubbed 'The Lady Gaga of Buddhist hymns' and her legion of fans would provbably tell that the nun is even better than Lady Gaga.
Dolma's recent project has brought her to Chennai to record with Music maestro and Oscar winner A R Rahman and her next stop will be Pune wher she will hold a concert. Now, you may have heard about a pop concert, or a rock concert, but a concert on Buddhist hymns would be unprecedented and there seems to be a groundswell of enthusiasm over the event in Pune.
She has reportedly an 'other worldly' voice and apparently only those with an affinity for 'spiritual vibes' have been invited to her concert. The money collected from her shows and record sales are put into the Nun’s Welfare Foundation in Nepal.
What is incredible is her success in making something so spiritual and niche, a genre for all, which every common man can relate to. Her success lies also in the fact that the nun has been able to spread the teachings of Buddhism in an enjoyable and non-esoteric way to the masses.
