Bhopal: The police fired several rounds in the air and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse a mob of agitated villagers who stormed into the Sarai Chola police station and took away seized tractor trolleys laden with illegally mined sand in Morena on Friday.
Incidentally, the village is close by the place where young IPS officer Narendra Kumar was killed while trying to stop a tractor trolley ferrying stone mined illegally.
The police faced the mob fury when they seized a couple of tractor trolleys carrying sand suspected to be illegally minded from Chambal river were taken to police station.
The police personnel were caught off guard when a mob of 25- 30 persons from village Kemra forced their way into the police station and set vehicles on fire. They took away a couple of seized tractor trolleys filled with sand in front of the police personnel, said a senior police official.
When the police personnel tried to stop them, the villagers assaulted them. In retaliation, police opened fire in the air several rounds and also lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the villagers.
The villagers in turn, pelted stones at the police personnel before they retreated.
The situation was tensed as the mob was large in number compared to the police personnel. The district administration rushed reinforcement to control the situation, said the police sources.
