Bhopal: Joining the drive against renaming Bhopal as Bhojpal , the Communist Party of India (CPI) has decided to launch a massive signature drive.
During a seminar, which was organised at the Mullah Ramuji Sanskriti Bhawan here, the CPI also announced that it will hold a peace rally which will be attended by noted scholars, intellectuals and prominent personalities of the city.
Speaking during the seminar, which was presided over by famous writer Bhagwat Rawat, senior lawyer Tikaram Yadav called for a legal action against those who have proposed changing the name of the capital.
Another noted novelist Ramprakash pointed out that the name Bhopal was coined from Bhupal and not from Bhojpal.
During the seminar, it was decided that a memorandum opposing the change of name with signatures of over one lakh people will be handed over to President Pratibha Patil.
The Opposition, Congress, had also warned of a public protest if the name of the capital was changed.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan while inaugurating the millennium year celebrations of Raja Bhoj’s accession at Lal Parade ground on February 28 had declared that the name of the state’s capital will be changed to Bhojpal from Bhopal. He had also announced that the names of the Bada Talab (Upper Lake) and VIP road will be changed to Bhojtal and Raja Bhoj Marg respectively.
According to officials, changing the names of state lakes and roads comes within the powers of the state government, and the required action will be taken after completing the due procedure.
