Indore: A 55-year old woman was robbed of expensive gold jewellery and Rs 18 lakh cash aboard the Mumbai-Indore Awantika Express on Monday morning.
According to the railway police, Jyotsana Shukla (55), a resident of Alibaug near Mumbai, was coming to Indore in Awantika Express for attending wedding of her relative. She was travelling in an air-conditioned coach, where the incident occurred.
Jyotsana had kept four diamond studded gold bangles, four gold bangles and cash amount of around Rs.18 lakh in her handbag. At night, she kept the handbag under her pillow and slept.
When the train halted at Ratlam station around 6 am she woke up and found that her handbag was missing.
She immediately raised an alarm but the train had departed by then. Soon the railway staff launched a search in the coach and found the empty purse lying in a toilet.
"The victim lodged a complaint of theft at railway police station after the train arrived here", railway police said.
Some coach attenders were taken into custody for interrogation. But they could not provide any clue about the thieves.
Police suspect that the handbag was stolen between Surat and Vadodara station when the victim was asleep.
