Mumbai: Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorists caught alive during the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, was hanged at 7.36 am at Pune's Yerwada jail on Wednesday after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy petition.
According to media reports, he was secretly shifted from Arthur Road Jail to Yerwada Jail on Monday.
Addressing a press meet, Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil confirmed the news of the Ajmal Amir Kasab's execution.
Patil said that the President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected his mercy plea on November 8.
He said that Kasab has been executed after due procedure of law.
His execution is a tribute to the victims of 26/11 attacks, he added.
Police sources said that Ajmal Kasab's body will not be handed to his hometown in Pakistan.
Sources reveal that Kasab's body has been buried in the graveyard in the Yerwada Jail.
Confirming the news, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said we have completed the judicial procedure of 26/11 case with the execution of Kasab.
Shinde said,"The External Affairs Ministry through our mission in Islamabad had informed the Pakistan government about Kasab's hanging. When they did not accept the letter, they were communicated through fax."
Union Home Secretary R K Singh said family members of Kasab, who live in Pakistan, had also been informed by Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
He said,"His family members were communicated through courier by our High Commission. We have the receipt of the courier sent and that was later given to the Maharashtra government."
Shinde said so far no one has claimed the body
Relieved at the news, Divya Salaskar (daughter of the slain encounter cop Vijay Salaskar) said, "After 4 yrs i.e. 1461 days later... I have received my justice... I have received my closure... I m beyond words today... Finally... Finally.. This 26/11 I will b different... Thank God"
Media reports state that India had informed Pakistan before Kasab's execution but received no response from them.
Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said, "It is victory for the country. By hanging Kasab, we have paid homage to all those policemen and innocent persons who lost their lives."
