New Delhi: India has got the dubious distinction of being the country with the second highest number of doping cases of the athletes. According to International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), India ranks second with 43 cases of doping this year. With 44 cases, Russia tops the chart.
All the dopers were being suspended by the respective sports body. Shockingly, India was leaving the Russians behind with a lead of 8 till last month. However, the IAAF lifted nine suspensions recently, resulting to a equally embarrassing second position.
Mukul Chatterjee, director-general of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), told the Indian Express, "The number of positive cases in athletics is on the rise. Out of 30 sportspersons who failed dope tests from April to July this year, 10 are track and field athletes. The number of positive cases that have emerged in athletics over the last couple of years is a matter of concern."
A majority of Indian athletes have been suspended for using banned steroids like stanozolol and methandienone.
