Jalandhar: Mobile users beware! As forwarding those hilarious messages featuring two confused Sikh gentlemen Santa Singh and Banta Singh can now land you in jail. A precedent has already been set in Jalandhar.
Jalandhar Police has revealed that they recently arrested a local named Atul Kumar and booked him under Section 295A of the IT Act under the Indian Penal Code for forwarding Santa Banta jokes to complainant Narinder Singh.
According to police sources, Narinder has claimed in his complaint that he had warned Atul to not to send such jokes as it offended his religious sentiments. Reportedly, Atul had sent him a message which had fifteen jokes on Santa and Banta.
“He continued sending me those jokes even when I had told him to not to do so as I am greatly offended by humour which mocks religion. He even messaged me a picture which featured Asaram Bapu with two naked girls,” Narinder told Bhaskar.
When pointed out to police are freely circulated across the country in good humour, highly placed police officials justified their move reminding us that they had got a complaint under Section 295A.
“It pertains to offending religious sentiments. We had to take action,” officials said.
Reportedly, Atul has been convicted by a local court and is now in jail.
