Jaipur: Cops might claim a dip in the crime rate in Jaipur, but the Pink City's stats aren't that rosy. Its 'safe' tag suffers a hit when police data shows increase in rape and kidnapping cases in the current year as compared to past two years.

Though total number of crimes committed in 2011 is 2,467, which is less than 2910 cases in the year 2010 and 3043 cases in 2009; however, the cases of rape have gone up from 44 in 2009 to 61 in 2011 and kidnapping incidents rose from 162 to 182 in the past two years.

On increase in rape incidents, a senior official said that urbanisation and better job prospects have offered opportunities to women to step out of their homes. "With this, their vulnerability to sexual crimes had also gone up," he said. He added that apart from police protection, women and girls should be more alert and adopt basic tips to protect themselves in such situations.

Explaining the reasons behind the rising graph, another cop said the awareness has increased and therefore more and more women, even in rural areas, are coming forward to report these crimes.

Another worrying trend is the rise in the number of persons kidnapped. In 2009, 162 cases of abduction were registered but it went down to 154 in 2010. In 2011, the figure again shot up to 182.

The good news, which brought little relief for police department, is drop in cases of murder, loot, chain-snatching and vehicle theft as compared to previous years. As far as murder cases are concerned, the number dipped from 69 last year to 47 in the current year; loot cases dropped from 165 to 114 and chain-snatchings were less by 35 from 79 cases in 2010 to 44 cases this year. The cases of vehicle lifting were restricted to 2019 in 2011, against 2387 cases last year.
