Jaipur: It seems the state government won’t have to struggle for distributing bikes to girls of backward classes. This is because the department of College Education has received over 3,500 applications.
Last year, the department had received 500 applications after extending the date four times.
Under the Devnarayan Scooty Distribution Scheme, girl with over 50 per cent marks in standard XII will get a scooty. This year, the government widened the scope and 1,000 girls of Special Backward Classes (SBC) who have over 50 per cent and are regular students in government colleges will get a bike. The selection will be on merit basis.
“The dropout rate has gone down and the enrolment rate has gone up. That’s why we have received more applications this year. Earlier, parents would stop girls from attending regular classes. Most girls would pursue a private degree. Now, parents themselves are encouraging girls to take admission in regular colleges and continue studies, as they will be get a bike on being a regular student,” said Vikram Singh Gurjar, assistant director, College Education department.
