New Delhi: In what is considered to be a major blow to India, the International Olympic Committee(IOC) on Tuesday suspended the country’s national Olympic committee for conducting its elections under the government’s sports code.
The IOC had earlier warned against government interferences in the elections and had demanded it to be conducted as per the Olympic Charter.
According to officials, the IOC executive board imposed the sanctions on Tuesday after the Indian Olympic Association(IOA) failed to comply with the world body’s rules on the holding of elections.
The IOC had repeatedly told the Indian body to adhere to its own constitution and the Olympic Charter and not follow the government's sports code for Wednesday's elections.
The suspension will halt IOC funding towards the Indian body and its officials will be banned from attending Olympic meetings and events in future.
The Indian athletes will also face a tough choice as they will be barred from competing in Olympic events under their national flag.
