New Delhi: A day after the twin blasts rocked the city of Hyderabad claiming 16 lives, the Australian team currently on tour in the country has showcased a positive spirit towards the game of cricket. Despite the blasts, the visitors are keen on playing their scheduled Test match in the city against India.
The Board of Control for Cricket has already said it sees no reason to shift the match out of Hyderabad and the visiting Australian team too has been quoted as saying that it will continue the series as scheduled, despite the bomb blasts that killed 16 people yesterday in the capital of Andhra Pradesh yesterday.
Former India captain and Congress MP Mohammad Azharuddin one of Hyderabad's most famous residents said outside Parliament today, "I appeal to the people and the BCCI and govt to assess the situation. Let the Test match happen at the new stadium. If the match is held it will send a strong message that despite terror, people are together."
He also urged the government to re-assess security for his city as, he said, "Hyderabad is not a stray, but a regular target."
The BCCI's Rajiv Shukla, who is also a central minister, said "I spoke to "the Union Home Secretary, who was in Hyderabad and had a discussion with the Chief Minister and officials of the state government. He apprised me that adequate security will be provided to the players as well as the spectators. So the Test match should not be shifted out of Hyderabad."
According to the AFP report, the Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland told Fairfax newspapers that the match was still on as planned. "As far as I'm concerned we are playing the second Test in Hyderabad next week. That's where we are at," said Mr Sutherland, who is with the team in Chennai, where the first Test began on Friday.
