Ayodhya/Faizabad: Twenty years have passed since the Babri Mosque was demolished on 6 December 1992. Although former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was often held responsible for his inaction, his book termed it a 'pre-planned conspiracy' of the then BJP-led Kalyan Singh government.

In his book "Ayodhya 6 December 1992" (Penguin Vikings) which was published posthumously, Narasimha Rao called the entire episode a "betrayal" by the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government of the then Chief Minister Kalyan Singh who gave repeated assurance of safety and security of the Barbi Mosque to the Centre only to break it later.

Now, an uneasy calm has prevailed in Ayodhya ahead of the 20th anniversary of Babri Mosque demolition which was razed in 1992. The BJP and its other wings, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal on Wednesday shouted ‘provocative’ slogan: "UP me Gujarat banega, Faizabad shuruat karega" (UP would become Gujarat, the beginning will be from Faizabad). The banners of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was seen across the temple town sending a message that BJP was keen on having Gujarat CM playing a key role in UP politics. To avoid any tension-like situation, security has been tightened in the twin towns of Ayodhya and Faizabad with nearly 10,000 police personnel pressed into service to manage law and order.

State police, Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel have been deployed at all key locations, besides a company of PAC for round-the-clock guarding of Saryu waters to prevent entry of any anti-social element through the river route.

"We are in regular touch with the responsible and peace loving persons of both the communities for maintenance of peace in the twin towns," SSP Dharmendra Singh said, giving details of security arrangements.

The local administration has encircled Ayodhya and Faizabad in a 3-tier security cordon that includes 4 zones, 9 sectors and 14 sub-sectors to be manned by additional SPs, deputy SPs, Inspectors and sub-inspectors respectively.

Two dozens CCTV cameras have been installed across Ayodhya to a keep close watch on movements, and entry to the city is being allowed only after complete security check, Singh said. (with PTI inputs)
