China's 'intrusion' aftermath: India goes for hi-tech thermal-imaging to check borders

New Delhi: The recent Boston Marathon bombings suspect was detected using the thermal-imaging devices as he was holed up in his last hiding place. With such devices already undergoing trials at the India-Bangladesh border, government is mulling to deploy this technique, to keep an eye over the Indo-China border.
 
The 4,095 km long India-Bangladesh border runs through ponds, fields and even houses where the entrance is in India and the backdoor in Bangladesh. It is considered as one of the most complex land borders across the world. 
 
China's deep intrusion recently into eastern Ladakh region was a well-planned exercise to needle India, claims a ToI report. More than 30 troops from the People's Liberation Army (PLA), came equipped with supplies for the long haul, claims the report.
 
These devices will be used at such places where human deployment is not feasible or extremely difficult. At least 3488 kms long-stretch is currently being guarded by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. 
 
Hence, advance techniques can prove to be efficacious in guarding these border areas, at times obscure places.

How does thermal imaging work?
 
After the Boston Marathon bombings, a helicopter equipped with a thermal imager had spotted the heat signature of a person inside a tarp-covered boat, sitting in a backyard in Watertown.
 
Thermal imagers can spot the signature of a heat source inside a house, a vehicle, or in this case, a vessel. Walls may stop visible-light wavelengths, but the heat can still pass through. Variations in heat emissions can be picked up by camera chips designed to be sensitive to the infrared part of the spectrum.
 
India is initiating talks in this matter with countries like Korea, Israel, Japan and America to assist in trials of these devices.
