Kaohsiung City, Taiwan:A giant yellow rubber duck is heading to Taiwan for exhibition starting next month as part of its global tour of "spreading joy around the world," the Greater Kaohsiung City Government said Monday.
Greater Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu told a press conference that she is glad Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman picked Kaohsiung as the first city in Taiwan to exhibit the massive, inflatable rubber duck.
The floating sculpture will be berthed at the Glory Dock from Sept. 19 to Oct. 20.
The city's Information Bureau Director Lai Rui-lung said Kaohsiung estimates the giant yellow installation would attract three million visitors each month and generate NT$1 billion (US$33 million) in tourism revenues.
Taoyuan County Commissioner John Wu revealed Monday that Taoyuan will be the second city in Taiwan to exhibit another rubber duck, in October.
And the government of the northeastern port city Keelung has said its citizens are anticipating the arrival of their super-sized bath-time friend in December.
Created in 2007, the inflatable rubber duck comes in various sizes, with the largest measuring 26 meters high and weighing more than 600 kilograms.
The one that will be displayed in Kaohsiung, which will be made in Taiwan, will be the largest in Asia and second largest in the world, Lai said, adding Taoyuan and Keelung will make their own ducks.
Emphasizing the rubber duck "knows no frontiers, it doesn't discriminate people and doesn't have a political connotation," Hofman said on his website that the "friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial (sic) tensions as well as define them."
Since the ducks began their global tour in 2007, they have been on display in 14 cities, including Osaka in 2009, Hiroshima in 2012 and Hong Kong in May and June this year.
