New Delhi: Former South Africa President Nelson Mandela, who died at his Johannesburg home at 95 years of age, is referred to as Gandhi of South Africa. There are striking similarities between Mahatma Gandhi and Mandela.

Mandela is most famous for his role in helping ending the apartheid. At first, he fought for the right of blacks, but after learning Gandhi's teachings, he broadened his spectrum to include all that were unjustly treated in South Africa.

Mandela often called Gandhi his role model. According to some experts, Mandela is like Mahatma Gandhi, a statesman of international repute and a man whose belief in non-violence impressed the whole nation.

Often referred to as one of Gandhi’s heirs, Mandela channeled his anger in a very constructive way. He walked the path of non-violence. Both are two of the greatest leaders and inspirations of all time. Both the names are seen together due to their similar leadership qualities. They both achieved independence for their countries through non-violent means. A Gandhist philosophy shaped the ANCs liberationist school of thought. Both Gandhi and Mandela spent time in the same prison in Johannesburg, Fort Prison.

Both Gandhi and Mandela had same goals. With great foresight, Mahatma Gandhi once predicted that someone in Africa would take up in his ideas. Gandhi himself lived in South Africa from 1893 to 1914, where he worked as a lawyer and published a newspaper for Indians.

Many great people have referred to Gandhi in their lives - Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mother Teresa, Lech Walesa, Martin Luther King and Aung San Suu Kyi.

Following Gandhi’s teachings, Mandela was able to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, contrary to Mahatma Gandhi. In a video message broadcasting in 2007, Mandela said that Gandhi’s ideas had played a vital role in South Africa’s transformation. With the help of Gandhi’s teaching, apartheid had been overcome.

Nelson Mandela, like Gandhi, had always been ready to sacrifice his life in order to create a just society.

One of the world’s most revered statesmen, Nelson Mandela, led the struggle to replace the apartheid regime of South Africa with a multi-racial democracy. Emerging as the country’s first black president, Mandela won the Nobel Peace prize in 1993. Nelson Mandela is known as the Father of the nation and it was his lifelong struggle that saw an end of apartheid in South Africa.
