Hyderabad: Young sensation Paul Valthaty produced a terrific all-round performance as Kings XI Punjab stunned hosts Deccan Chargers by an 8-wicket win at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday.
After shining with the leather, claiming 4/29, Valthaty scored an outstanding 75 and shared a 136-run stand with skipper Adam Gilchrist (61) for the first wicket to help his side pull off a comprehensive victory.
The hosts looked clueless to Valthaty’s onslaught as he smashed five magnificent sixes and eight boundaries to stun the local supporters.
Gilchrist on the other hand, provided ample support to the youngster and tutored him to play fluently in his natural style.
It was in the 14th over when the hosts got their first breakthrough when Amit Mishra removed Gilchrist. However, it was too little, too late for the Deccan Chargers as the openers had already put the team on course for victory.
Valthaty levelled Mumbai Indians skipper Sachin Tendulkar as the leading run getter in the tournament with his 75-run knock. Valthaty and Tendualkar have amassed 201 runs each in the cash-rich league.
Valthaty restrict Deccan Chargers to 165/8
After shining with the in the previous match against Chennai Super Kings, Paul Valthaty on Saturday spell magic with the ball to restrict Deccan chargers to 165/8 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
Valthaty finished with an impressive figure of 4/29 that included the crucial wicket of Shikhar Dhawan (46) and Daniel Christian (30).
Earlier, Kings XI won the toss and elected to field. The hosts got off to a poor start as they lost opener Sunny Sohal with just 7 runs on board.
Skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Dhawan then took charge and started scoring at good pace.
After the duo laid platform for a huge total, Piyush Chawla struck to dismiss Sangakkara. Before the Chargers could recover from the second blow, Valthaty dismissed Dhawan to unsettle the hosts.
The middle-order then failed to capitalise on the brilliant 2nd wicket partnership and succumbed to the magical spin of Valthaty. It was only Christian who made a quick-fire 30 to power Chargers to a challenging total.
