Chandigarh: A day after Bjp announced the candidature of actor Kirron Kher from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha constituency, several party activists staged a protest here and resigned from their posts on Sunday.
Demanding Kirron's replacement with a local leader as the party's nominee, Ramveer Bhatti, Vice President, BJP's Chandigarh Unit along with his supporters held protest and stepped down.
Various party workers burnt Kher's effigy and demanded that the party's central leadership should review its decision to field Kher (58), wife of actor Anupam Kher, from Chandigarh.
They said that the party should field any of the three local party leaders- Sanjay Tandon, Harmohan Dhawan and Satyapal Jain, who were top contenders for the seat.
Both Dhawan and Tandon said that they would support the candidate nominated by the party, even as their supporters expressed resentment by staging protests.
Dhawan said that local party workers were angry over Kirron's candidature. Expressing his resentment, Dhawan said, "The BJP will lose the elections if she contests the elections."
Reportedly, the local party wokers also contacted the party's President Rajnath Singh and questioned him over giving ticket to the actress. However, Rajnath rebuked the caller saying that the party had taken its final decision.
According to a report published in Dainik Bhaskar, Kirron said, "It feels good that the party has chosen me to contest from Chandigarh. The party workers that are protesting against my candidature are 'mentally ill'. I shall be reaching there after Holi."
Kirron is expected to reach the city on March 18 from Mumbai.
