Chandigarh: Punjab is known for its agricultural produce across the country but is the produce stored and distributed well? Government records show that the produce is often wasted in storages while several people across India sleep on an empty stomach. At least 97,000 tonnes of wheat rot in government storages.
Punjab government plans to auction mere 47,000 tonnes of the wheat. Punjab Food and Supplies Minister Adarsh Pratap Singh confirmed the figures for wheat wasted away in the storages on Monday.
Singh told Bhaskar News that the rest of the wheat is yet to be auctioned as permits for the same are yet to come.
Punjab has a capacity of storing 2.04 crore tones of grains and one crore tone of these are kept in covered godowns while the rest is stored in open. Currently, 64 lakh tones of wheat and 55 lakh tones of rice are left in the godowns from the last year’s produce.
