New Delhi: Social activist and ideological mentor of Arvind Kejriwal distanced himself from his estranged protégé’s political actions appealing to him in a letter that his name not be used in canvassing for Delhi assembly elections by the newly formed Aam Aadmi Party(AAP).
The open letter, written on Sunday night, even questioned the source of funding of party’s political activities, an allegation which could blunt AAP’s appeal to Delhi voters to vote for AAP owing on its honest credentials.
Hazare asked Kejriwal whether the money collected during the Jan Lokpal agitation has been diverted and is being used for contesting the Delhi Assembly elections.
"I believe money which is being collected in the name of agitation should be used for an agitation only," wrote Hazare in the letter which comes days after the government has ordered probe into AAP's funding.
"Information which is coming from your end is troubling me, therefore I request you not to use my name during elections campaign and also not to propagate that I'am associated with any political party," the septuagenarian is said to have written.
"Some people have came to me saying that you have launched a SIM card or card in my name and had collected some money. Neither I have allowed you nor anyone to use my name. To collect money for the elections is your responsibility but using my name for this is not right" Hazare also pointed out in the letter.
Hazare, who worked with Kejriwal during the Jan Lokpal movement in 2011 and 2012, had opposed his decision to form a political party and contest elections to fight corruption.
Hazare also criticised Kejriwal for telling the people that Delhi Assembly will pass the Jan Lokpal Bill if AAP is voted to power. In his letter Hazare explained that only Parliament can pass such a bill and his fight is for a clean Parliament. "How could you bring Jan Lokpal in Assembly? It's pending in Lok Sabha."
Ending corruption is one of the major promises made by AAP in its Vision Document.
“Passing the Jan Lokpal will be one of our immediate deliverables if we come to power,” party leader Yogendra Yadav had earlier told Daily Bhaskar.
Meanwhile, a man claiming to be BJP supporter threw black ink at Kejriwal during a press conference in New Delhi on Monday. He shouted 'Anna Hazare zindabad' after throwing ink at Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan. The man identified himself as Nachiketa and said that he had come from Maharashtra.
He alleged that Kejriwal had misused Anna Hazare's name. "I have done this this to protest that these people have betrayed Anna and they have betrayed the Jan Lokpal andolan. Anna has asked then to not use his name, still these people are using Anna's name. I am a BJP worker," he said after throwing the ink at Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan during a press conference at New Delhi's Constitution Club. The attacker had earlier claimed that he was a Hazare supporter but later said that he was a BJP activist.
Before the attack Kejriwal had said that if there is any problem in AAP's accounts then he would withdraw his candidature from Delhi Assembly elections.
"Last (Sunday) night when I returned from campaigning I received a letter from Anna Hazare. The letter says a lot of people have complained against Arvind. We respect Anna Hazare, he is like our guru. He has raised some issues in the letter," said Kejriwal while revealing the details of the letter.
He also tweeted: "I forgive Nachiketa. I have no ill will against him. He seems to have some misconceptions abt us."
BJP leaders condemned the attack. "Condemn the disruption of AAP's Press Conference. Understand the person is BJP IT Cell Tehsil in- charge, Tehsil Parner (Dist Ahmadnagar)," tweeted BJP spokesperson Niramala Seetharaman. But she tweeted again claiming that Nachiketa was no longer associated with the par
