    New Delhi: The national capital has emerged as the most unsafe city for women. According to the figures of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), no other city even come remotely close.
    In 2011, more rapes were reported from Delhi (572) than from Mumbai (221), Kolkata (46), Chennai (76), Bangalore (97) and Hyderabad (59) put together.
    The figures for some other prominent cities were: Pune (79), Ahmedabad (60), Bhopal (100), Jaipur (92), Lucknow (38), Patna (27), Kochi (30), Thiruvananthapuram (39) and Coimbatore (9).
    A statewise distribution of 2011's rape statistics sees Madhya Pradesh at 3,406 incidents accounting for 14.1 percent of the country's recorded rape cases, closely followed by West Bengal at 2,363 incidents (9.8 percent) and Uttar Pradesh at 2,042 incidents (8.4 percent).
    The other state where a large number of rapes have been reported from is Rajasthan at 1,800 incidents (7.4 percent).
    Assam and Maharashtra are tied in the next slot with 1,700 incidents each (7 percent each). Andhra Pradesh at 1,442 incidents (6 percent) and Kerala at 1,132 incidents (4.7 percent) also report significant number of rapes.
    Other major states fare like this: Odisha (1,112 incidents, 4.6 percent), Bihar (934 incidents, 3.9 percent), Jharkhand (784 incidents, 3.2 percent), Haryana (733 incidents, 3 percent), Tamil Nadu (677 incidents, 2.8 percent), Karnataka (636 incidents, 2.6 percent), Punjab (479 incidents, 2 percent), Gujarat (439 incidents, 1.8 percent) and Jammu & Kashmir(277 incidents, 1.1 percent).

    Uttarakhand, Goa and the northeastern states of Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh fare much better (each recording less than 1 percent of the total number of reported cases in the country). Sikkim with 16 incidents recorded the least number of cases among all states in the country.
