Sohan Roy’s film ‘Dam 999’ might have ruffled some feathers back in the country, but it’s nominations in the long list of Oscars made the director hopeful. But, all his hope came crashing down, when the film failed to secure a place in the final nomination list of the 84th Academy Awards.
The film was nominated in the long list in best picture, best original song and best original score categories. The nominations were announced at the Sameul Goldwyn Theatre.
Though, the film created much controversy in India for allegedly being made on Mullaperiyar dam. However, it’s recognition in the global award ceremony was much appreciated.
‘DAM 999’ tells the tale of a cracking dam built during colonial rule and revolves around nine characters and their emotions. The lives of all the nine characters revolve around the central edifice -- the pressure-mounted dam.
Moreover, the film was not competing with others in the foreign movie category, but was amongst 265 films that were contending for the best picture nomination at the Oscars.
The film was up against international biggies like ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’, ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’, ‘Thor’, ‘Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol’.
Also, three of the films songs – ‘Dakkanaga Dugu Dugu’, ‘DAM999 Theme Song’ and ‘Mujhe Chhod Ke’ were among the 39 shortlisted for nominations in the original song category.
The Oscar presentation ceremony will take place on Feb 26.
