Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Movie Review: DDLJ's 8945th badly made remake
Let me start with the one thing that the filmmakers have been touting as their USP - that this is a tributish remake of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaiyenge. In reality - this is a badly botched attempt at a remake or a tribute to DDLJ.
How would you like to taste a substandard local wine when the original French wine is cooling in a chiller on your table, to be had at any time? To make matters worse this 8945th badly made remake of DDLJ is an overdose especially since the Indian audience is bombarded with similar films every other week.
Having said that, let's take this review one step at a time - and address all the questions you may have about the movie -
Is it a remake of DDLJ?
Absolutely. HSKD is just another attempt at creating DDLJ’s magic. The difference is that it is an official attempt. From climax train scene to dialogues, many important scenes have been copied from DDLJ.
The worst part is that Karan Johar who played a bit part in the original has produced the film and doesn't seem to have gotten over the movie yet.
The difference is you don't have a boorish brat NRI kid, instead you have a boorish Dilliwalla. And Simran's last hurrah before being married is hunt for the ultimate designer lehenga (yup, A manish Malhota at that.. Sigh!) The 'Kuljeet' equivalent is the beefcake Siddharth Shukla who plays the NRI Angad.
We'll not tell you more of the story in case you still want to watch the film - it's uffice to say that there are bits that are pleasant and nice in the film and if you are young, in love or hoping to fall in love - you'll like the film.
How is the direction?
There are certain parts in the film, which have not been lifted from the cult Srk film, and director Shashank Khaitan’s strength reflects in those parts. The director is talented, he only need a fresh story.
How is the chemistry between Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt?
Both Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt have again proved their acting strength in the film. They might not be able to repeat Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s magic, but they have something about their own chemistry which impress. infact as a character Alia's Kavya is definitely more gutsy than simpering Simran and not just because of the fact that she can guzzle a beer faster then the boys.
Big Question - Should I watch Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania?
After numerous failed attempts, it’s time our Bollywood filmmakers should stop making another DDLJ. The film, however, is good in parts, and you can’t completely write off. Also, it’s a delight for Varun and Alia’s fans.
And our final verdict cant be better than what is one of the film's better lines - that Humpty Shrma ki Dulhania is a '100% original fake'.
Who would you like to taste a substandard wine, when you have the most premium wine on your table. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is like that substandard wine, whose finest version you already have at home. Touted as the tribute to SRK’s DDLJ, HSKD could be 2891’s attempt by Bollywood’s filmmakers to create the same magic on big screen, which Aditya Chopra and SRK created 20 years back. To make it simple for you, Indian audience is bombarded with DDLJ-like-romantic-love stories every second week.
