Khoobsurat Movie Review: Royal mess which bores you after a point
Usually we try not to reveal the plot, story and surprise element of a film in the reviews. But there is no such concern with Sonam Kapoor’s Khoobsurat as there need to be some surprise in the film, which if revealed, might affect the viewer’s experience.
Khoobsurat, we know by now, is inspired from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Khoobsurat (1980), and Hollywood film The Princess Diaries (2001). But if you think these are the only two inspirations of director Shashanka Ghosh, here is an eye opener.
1) Kirron Kher as Manju Chakravarty= Kirron Kher from (Main Hoon Na+ Rang De Basanti+ Kambakkht Ishq+ Total Siyapaa + Infinty).
2) Ratna Pathak as Nirmala Devi Rathore = Maya Sarabhai of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai + Savitri Rathore of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.
3) Sonam Kapoor as Dr. Milli Chakravarty = Aisha Kapoor of Aisha + Simran Saxena of I Hate Luv Storys.
4) Fawad Khan’s character is also inspired from paintings and pictures of kings we have seen on walls in many Bollywood films. He has the same expressions throughout the film.
The film has expensive sets, which look interesting initially, but the week plot makes it boring after a point. And the film has a couple of cliche characters like a crippled King, who even a 5-year old could tell that will walk in the climax, and a Ramu Kaka (really, you named him that), who has just one dialogue, “Ji Hukum.”
But we can’t completely write-off the film, it has its own funny and interesting moments. Kirron Kher, despite her repetitive acting, is still fun to watch.
How is the film different from original Khoobsoorat (1980)?
It is loosely based on the original Khoobsoorat. From sets to characters, everything is completely different. The only similarity is the plot. Both the films tell the story of a girl, who goes into a strict family, and changes everything.
How is Sonam Kapoor?
You have seen her in the trailers of Khoobsurat, in Aisha, on the ramp and on the red carpets. She is doing nothing new in the film. This is just another performance by Sonam Kapoor.
How is Fawad Khan?
He has become every girl’s favorite in India, and we know he can act too, thanks to Zindagi Gulzar Hai. He is playing prince in the film, and he didn’t disappoint us despite the same expressions throughout the film. He has a long way to go in Bollywood.
Big Question-Should I watchKhoobsurat?
You can’t completely write-off the film, it’s a one time watch if you have nothing to do this weekend. In fact, Kirron Kher, despite her repetitive acting, is still very entertaining throughout the film. Presence of Fawad Khan will definetly drag her female fans to the theater. Rest, Sonam Kapoor's fans will get what they expect from her.
