Movie Review Dum Laga Ke Haisha: A beautifully projected story that every 90s lover must watch
It’s got the magic of 90s era, it’s got a simple story packed with even simpler jokes and it’s got Ayushmann Khurana at his best. Dum Laga Ke Haisha is a gem that must be appreciated for its simplistic sheen. The dialect in the film will leave you in splits just as Sanjay Mishra’s straightforward one-liners. Director Sharat Kataria who has made a directorial debut with Dum Laga Ke Haisha successfully re-creates the enigma of 90s as the movie lucidly progresses into a sweet love story.
While Ayushmann Khurana might go on to re-conquer his fan-base with this one, the real star of the film stands Bhumi Pednekar who looks very real in every scene. If there is any good left in the world, this fine actress must be rewarded for her effortless performance even in scenes that could come across as tricky ones for a new comer. And then there is Sanjay Mishra who garnishes the film with his very raw remarks and punches every 5 minutes in the film.
First they re-create that 90s era when love marriages were still finding feet, when CDs were fast replacing humble audio cassettes and when Kumar Sanu was the reigning king of Bollywood music. And then they infuse music into the film that effortlessly makes you believe you are still living in times of Doordarshan. Dard Karara by Kumar Sanu is a tribute to the man himself. The choreography, the background dancers, and not to forget the vivid colours of the costumes are sure to make you nostalgic; (Remember Jackie Shroff grooving in god-awful prints with background dancers in the most scenic locations?)
Well, the only pitfalls in the film that could be stated can be the smaller plots that have been unnecessarily infused which make the story slightly confusing for the audience.
The film is a must watch for the 90s lovers who continue to listen to Kumar Sanu’s hits from that era on Youtube. Even so, catch it for its simple story and very genuine performances as it comes as a break from loud Bollywood romantic projects that leave you with false ideas about love.
Set in 90s, Dum Laga Ke Haisha is a simple love story met with praiseworthy performances.
