Mumbai: Chulbul ‘Robin hood’ Pandey was a runway success, but actor Salman Khan is not the only one, who can be credited for the character’s popularity. In fact, a lot of it went into making the maverick character look so realistic on the big screen!
Well, there are a lot of things that you don’t know about Chulbul Pandey and here’s the story behind the character’s look.
Chulbul Pandey's character was no cake walk for Salman, who has been nominated for the Abhineta No. 1 category of the country’s most democratic people’s choice awards- Bhaskar Bollywood Awards.
The look was the key factor and Salman had to work on it rigorously, especially when Arbaaz Khan insisted that Salman will have to grow a moustache, which would suit the character of a police officer.
“Arbaaz would come with different kinds and sizes of moustaches and ask me to grow one on the basis of those. This was almost six months before the Dabangg shoot commenced,” says Salman.
Sources suggest that Salman tried more than 50 styles of moustaches, in a span of four months and also went through the same number of photo sessions.
What’s more, a dilemma was waiting for Salman, on the first day of the shoot of Dabangg in Wai.
"On the first day of the shoot, I tried different moustaches, but nothing worked out for me, only adding to the agony. I also had to cut my hair off since I had just finished shooting for Veer and I was skeptical to do that, as I loved the look," grins Salman.
The actor finally got some consolation and a piece of advice from debutant Sonakshi, daughter of Shatrughan Sinha.
Khan elaborates, "Sonakshi had this thing for her dad's moustache. So, I finally got inspired with Shatruji's style. If you see my moustache, it looks similar to his, in some scenes.”
After the moustache issue was sorted out, Arbaaz got Salman to work on a ripped body look since he had to play a cop. If that wasn’t all, Salman ended up being envious of his co actor, Sonu Sood’s bulky body.
"I had lost a lot of weight and was looking really ripped, but I was jealous of Sonu Sood, who worked out for hours to get a pumped up muscular body," says Salman, who had a series of arguments with his brother Arbaaz and filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap over his look.
Sipping coffee and getting into a serious mode, Salman exclaims, "Arbaaz told me not to compare myself with Sonu and get into my character. I refused to do so, which resulted in a series of beefy debates but later, I realised that he was right. Perhaps, a muscular cop would have not suited the role.”
Throughout the 45-day shoot, Salman kept on taunting Sonu Sood, whenever he found him working out at the makeshift gym on the sets.
"I used to pull Sonu's leg and used to tell him ‘Tujhko agli film me dekh lunga,” adds the actor.
Perhaps, Salman's dream may soon come true, as Dabangg 2 is on the cards and Sonu will be playing a bad man again.
There’s still time for Salman’s dream to come true, but Bollywood’s very own hunk, is among the lucky five, who have made it to the final voting round in the Abhineta No. 1 category of the Bhaskar Bollywood Awards.
