We have known it for almost four decades now. But maybe some of our dedicated readers are not aware of this fascinating story, and hence we are retelling the tale.
That Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’ is an epic of epics is what is given already, but did you know that two of the leading actors in the movie, Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini, never shot a scene together in the same frame at all? Yes, it’s true. And the legend has it that Sanjeev Kumar, the eternal bachelor, had just proposed to Hema Malini, the eternal dream girl, for marriage before the shooting of the film had begun. And Hema Malini had reportedly rejected his offer. Hence, working in the same movie obviously was uncomfortable for the both of them after the incident. Therefore, it was a request to the director that there should not be an instance in the movie when both of them are needed to feature in the same frame. Even for scenes where they seem together, are shot separately.
Hema Malini was unmarried at that time, but the rumours were that she was very much seeing Dharmendra already by then. And so, Dharmendra was also known to be extremely cautious about this no-scenes-together policy.
We enjoy telling you about such incidents involving the legends of Bollywood cinema. Stay tuned for more.
