Apple iPhone 7's Sapphire Glass display to be manufactured by Foxconn
Apple has went into an agreement with its Chinese manufacturer of Iphone 6 and 6 Plus, Foxconn for the production of sapphire crystal glass for the new iPhone that will be launched next year. According to a news report in Macx.cn (via kitguru) Foxconn will be making sapphire glass display panels for the iPhone 7s.
Well, Apple did want to launch the Iphone 6 this year with Sapphire Glass display panel. A big leak in form of a 5 minute video appeared in July this year showing a display screen. (See here) Apple uses sapphire to cover the Touch ID sensor and certain camera lenses, but the glass could not make to the whole front panel of the new handset. But the next handset is expected to be based on the Sapphire display front panel.
When a company got bankrupt producing Sapphire displays for Apple iPhones?
According to a news report in TheVerge, Apple was using the services of GT Advanced Technologies (GTAT) for making these display panels. This company recently filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code in the US Bankruptcy Court, District court of New Hampshire. The company plans to shut down two production plants and lay off 890 workers because it was not able to produce the “quality required by Apple”. This includes shutting down the Apple-owned sapphire production plant in Mesa, Arizona, reports MacRumours. Read here and here
According to a Wall Street Journal report (via BGR) GTAT suffered a loss of 500 sapphire bricks in the production process and 578 pounds of sapphire it had produced three days before it signed the deal with Apple.
After GTAT, the next stop is Foxconn
Now the Cupertino-based company has entered into Foxconn for sapphire glass for iPhones. The agreement, according to Macx.cn (via kitguru) includes making a factory near Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, China to install manufacturing facility for sapphire crystal glass for next iPhones. This will be located not far away from the factory where Apple Smartphones are produced/assembled (by Foxconn).
