Cop-turned-chain snatcher held along with accomplices; jewellery recovered
Mumbai: A cop who had been dismissed on corruption charges was arrested from Ulhasnagar on Saturday for running a jewellery snatching racket.
According to a mumbaimirror.com report, Rajesh Ingole, a former head constable who is known to have served both the Mumbai and Thane police was nabbed when police, acting on a tip-off, raided a jewellery shop in the area. The Vitthalwadi police, who had got information that the gang was planning to sell the stolen pieces of jewellery in Camp No 4 in Ulhasnagar, arrested Ingole and his accomplices Manoj Raut (27), Haresh Mali (26), and Sajjan Sharma (40), all residents of Bhiwandi in Thane.
When confronted by the police, Ingole claimed himself to be a policeman investigating a case of stolen jewellery. However a gold chain worth Rs 1.4 lakh was recovered from his person.
On being grilled by the cops, Ingole confessed of having robbed the gold chain along with his accomplices on May 27 from a woman at Camp No 5 in Ulhasnagar.
"Ingole confessed to robbing the gold chain on May 27," said an officer from Vitthalwadi police station. "He thought he wouldn't be caught if he lay low for a while. In fact, that case was registered in our police station. The complainant is teacher named Nalini Sonar, who was returning from school when the accused and his accomplices snatched the chain and fled on a bike."
The police now suspect that Ingole and his gang may have been involved in cases in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane over the last one year. They also suspect that Ingole and his accomplices may have robbed people by posing as cops.
There were several cases of fake cops robbing senior citizens in Thane and Mumbai and we suspect Ingole's gang could have been behind those incidents as well," said the officer. Ingole served in the police department for around 15 years and was posted in both Thane and Mumbai.
