Indore: Makar Sankranti, one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus, was celebrated in the city with great devotion, fervor & gaiety on Monday.
The citizens travelled to holy places including Omkareshwar and Ujjain for holy bath in sacred Narmada and Kshipra Rivers and pray to Lord Sun. The devout especially children offered thousands of their colorful oblations to Lord Sun in the form of beautiful kites all over the skyline.
The faithful also offered goods made of "til" (sesame) to the poor, an act of charity believed to bring spiritual benefit on Makar Sankranti when the Sun enters the tropic of Capricorn. The citizens were seen feeding to cows at almost every square of the city.
A designer kite competition was organised to celebrate Makar Sankranti at School of Fine Art at IPS Academy on Monday. The students made designer kites with patriotic messages written on them to pay tribute to the martyrs.
At least 200 students and faculty members participated in the programme. Abid Javed, a B Com students, won first prize while Rahul Verma of BSC and Suyash Tiwari of engineering secured second and third position, respectively. The programme came to an end with distribution of Til Gud.
Nilgiri College of Professional Studies organised a kite flying programme to celebrate 'Makar Sankranti' festival.
The students and college staff enjoyed the festival by flying colorful kites.
Principal, Dr Manjeet Arora briefed the students about importance of celebrating the festival. The students and college staff exchanged wishes and distributed the dishes of 'Til Gud' at the end of the programme.
On the occasion of National Youth Day an extempore speech competition was organized at Arihant College in which many students participated enthusiastically. Various topics like "If were Anna Hazare.", If I was in Big Boss House etc were given to the students. Many creative and interesting thoughts were put forth by the students.
Jaan Mohd. of BBA (HA) III semester secured 1st position in the competition. Card making competition was organized in which the participants made very beautiful cards based on Makar Sakranti theme. Lata Bherwani of B Ed class stood first.
These two competitions were followed by a kite flying competition in the campus of Arihant Education Group. Faculties & students from Management, Paramedical, and Commerce & Education participated enthusiastically in the competition. Colourful kites with messages on anti corruption, anti harassment for women & success mantra flew freely in the endless sky giving message of liberty and rising up.
