New Delhi: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is set to lose the national party status after producing a dismal show in the just concluded Haryana and Maharashtra assembly polls.
The party, led by Mayawati, was required to win the two seats in order to hold on to the status of national party, but, ended up with just single seat in Haryana and none in Maharashtra. The Election Commission (EC) is still to take a final decision in this regard.
BSP had contested on all 90 seats in Haryana and 260 seats in Maharashtra. The single winner was Tek Chand Sharma from Prithla in Haryana.
After a poor performance in Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission had served a notice to the party asking why it’s national status shouldn’t be scrapped. Then, the party had requested the EC to provide it sometime, till Haryana and Maharashtra elections are not over.
However, with just single seat in its kitty, BSP is under danger to lose its national status.
In case the EC scraps BSP’s status of national party, benefits such as use of All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (to name a few) for election campaign broadcast would also be taken away from the latter.
