Nagpur: Yakub Memon, whose capital punishment was upheld by Supreme Court on Thursday for his role in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast, was emotionally attached to 2001 Parliament Attack mastermind Afzal Guru, reports said.
A newspaper report claimed that Yakub, the chartered accountant brother of 1993 Mumbai bomb blast mastermind Tiger Memon, was so depressed by Afzal Guru's hanging that he refused to eat for day at Nagpur Central Jail.
Times of India attributed the information to a senior source in the jail saying that Yakub had then remained away from food for three days and the amicable man withdrew into his shell. "We think he had already got the information about Supreme Court verdict in his own case," TOI quoted a jail official as saying. The prison official claimed that this sudden outburst of emotions were never seen before on an otherwise unflappable Yakub's calm exterior since his arrival at Nagpur Central Jail in August 2007.
Yakub, who was convicted along with Sanjay Dutt, is among the 26, including a woman, awaiting the gallows in this jail. Sanjay Dutt was ordered to serve five years in prison, of which he has already served 18 months in prison.
