New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a case of rape against Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and provided him compensation of 5 lakh for 'damage of reputation'.
The Apex Court cleared the leader of the charges of rape and abduction saying that the petition filed against Rahul was without substance which damaged his and his family's reputation. Petition against Rahul Gandhi was filed by former SP MLA Kishore Samrite.
There is not an iota of evidence against Rahul, petition filed against him baseless, the SC said.
Earlier, UP government had filed its affidavit refuting Samrite’s allegation that he had filed the case against Rahul at the behest of UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Samrite alleged that the family of a girl Sukanya Devi, from Amethi, had gone missing after a trip there by Rahul Gandhi and his friends in 2006.
He claimed that the girl was raped and then held illegally to prevent the story from coming out. He said an "astronomical" amount had been slapped on him as cost.
