bhagavad_260Chandigarh: Amid ongoing furore over a bid to ban Hindu scripture Bhagwad Gita in Russia, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal members staged protest in Chandigarh on Tuesday. Protestors gathered in front of the ISCON temple in sector 36 and demanded the Indian government to take appropriate steps to safeguard the rights of Hindus in Russia.

Vice president of the VHP's Punjab wing, Naresh Arora said that Gita is holy book of Hindus and it gives message of peace and harmony, so there is no sense behind banning it.

Along with Arora, Vijay Singh of VHP and Devinder Singh of Bajrang Dal were also present in the agitation.

A Russian court had on Monday suspended its verdict till December 28 on the demand for banning Bhagvad Gita, which a group linked to the Christian Orthodox Church has described as 'extremist'.

On Tuesday, Union External Affairs Minister SM Krishna assured the Parliament that India has registered its protest to the Russian government on a petition seeking a ban on Bhagwad Gita in a Siberian court.

"Our Embassy has intervened on the matter. The Embassy in Moscow is in regular touch with the lawyers in the case."

Krishan said that the matter has also been taken up with higher officials in Russia.
