Amritsar: A group of admirers of legendary singer of yesteryear Mohammad Rafi has made the demand that the singer be awarded the highest civilian honour of the country-the Bharat Ratna for his unforgettable contribution to Hindi playback music and reached Rafi's ancestral village of Kotla Sultan Singh.
The group members smeared soil from the village on their foreheads in a symbolic resolution for taking up and following the demand. They said that in spite of the quality of the work done by Rafi, it was unjust on the part of the government to still not recommend him for the coveted award.
One of Rafi's die-hard fans, Sanjiv Kumar Dikshit had been carrying on a similar campaign in Lucknow. He had also come to Amritsar with the hope of spreading his campaign. Dikshit revealed that the group of admirers would be headed next to Rafi's grave in Mumbai.
Dikshit said that he has been engaged in campaigning for Rafi's ageless songs and taking them to people since 1988.
Joining hands with Dikshit, folk singer Harinder Sohal and the other admirers called for a spreading of the campaign on a massive scale through SMS, phone and other modes of communication.
Songs like 'Deewana Hua Badal', 'Barsat Ki Raat' , 'O Duniya Ke Rakhwale', Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par' and many, many others are still heard and celebrated, even by the younger generations. The great singer is known to have recorded over 26,000 songs in his illustrious career in Hindi, English and almost all regional languages of the country, till his untimely death in 1980 at the age of 56.
