Jaipur: Fourteen-year-old Rakhi Kumari was too young to rebel when her parents married her off to a 16-year-old boy on Wednesday. The ceremony took place two days before Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej.
Rakhi's parents were not alone in marrying their daughters two days before the Hindu's auspicious day. The collectorate office received around seven complaints of child marriages from Sambhar, Shahpura and Amber.
Four child marriages were stopped in Sambhar on Wednesday while other complaints are being verified.
ADM, city south, Jaipur, Jaswant Singh said many more child marriages go uninformed around Akshaya Tritiya. "Since police, NGOs and anganwadi workers keeps a keen eye on child marriages on the day parent try to tie the knot of their children a day or two before Akshaya Tritiya," said Singh.
Aware of the number of child marriages taking place on and before Akshaya Tritiya, the department has tighten its belt to save as many children as possible. Control rooms have been set in all sub divisional magistrate office. The workers appointed to stop child marriages were sent written direction on immediate enquiry on any child marriages taking in any part of the state on Wednesday, said Singh.
"The major problem is not being intimated on a child marriage. If we happen to get the information beforehand, our appointed workers always manage to stop it," said collector Naveen Mahajan. The department had already announced to arrest anyone from priest, catering, invitees to photographer who is found to facilitate a child marriage.
"Our workers are working round the clock to make sure that no child marriages take place quietly," informs Sarita Singh, secretary, women and child development.
