Jaipur: Lack of proper maintenance, trained workers and unavailability of spare parts of the low-floor buses can lead to more brake failures and fatal accidents in city.
On an average 40 of a fleet of 221 buses remain off the road daily.
Most low-floor buses with complaints of brake fails, flat tyre and broken air supply pipes, at Sanganer and Vidyadhar Nagar depots are not repaired properly.
Mechanics and drivers complain they are not trained to handle low-floor buses as these are rare models.
“Most of the mechanics are not trained. The buses run on a different system and only Ashok Leyland’s workers can repair them, who are not easily available,” said a source.
Notably, there is no annual maintenance contract with the manufacturer to repair the buses like in case of Volvos.
There is also a problem in availability of spare parts. Even a basic part, like oil seal or axel packing, is unavailable in store. “The store lacks basics spares like tyre kit, break pipe and oil seal as not many cities have such buses. It takes time to arrange them,” said a Roadways official.
As a result, the buses are not fit enough to ply on routes. In addition, these consume more fuel. “Ideally, the buses should give an average of 4 km/ltr but these are giving 2-2.5 km/ltr,” he said.
Currently, there are 221 normal low-floor and 40 air-conditioned buses. Also, there is a lack of space for maintenance at the two depots. JCTSL MD Shushi Sharma said the process is on to contract a company for maintenance for buses and to acquire land for another depot.
“There have been brake fails and buses running over dividers. By November, proper maintenance would begin. We have invited tenders, and process to acquire land for depot is also underway,” said Sharma.
