Mumbai: The first ball of the ongoing Test match between India and West Indies drew loud cheers from a boisterous Wankhede crowd. No, it didn’t get any of West Indies’openers, neither did it remotely threaten the man on strike Chris Gayle. The Bhuvneshwar Kumar innocuous inswinger was played by the imposing Jamaican to wide mid-on, where a certain Sachin Tendulkar did a routine field-work, and the stadium erupted.
As the camera zoomed on fans who had passionately painted themselves in Sachin frenzy, chunks of vacant stands were hard to miss. For all the hype created around Little Master’s last Test match, the crowds just didn’t turn up; or was it? With just 5000-odd tickets on offer for lesser mortals, an Eden reprise was always on the cards, and the eventual beneficiaries didn’t disappoint either.
Kyazoonga.com, the single point of sale for the Test match, on Tuesday announced that all the tickets for the iconic game had been sold out; this despite the site having crashed on Monday and being pathetically slow thereafter. Who got the tickets then? With everyone, from politicians to diplomats to MCA mandarins to BCCI top bosses vying for a seat for the highly anticipated game, a possibility of hoarding can’t be ruled out.
The cricket’s governing body in India has reserved 2500 tickets for itself, with a whopping 12,000 being set aside for gymkhanas and Garware Club members. As is their wont, the officials failed to turn up, depriving thousands of fans from once in a lifetime spectacle.
The crowds definitely swell in post-lunch session, but substantial number of empty seats does suggest a collusive bureaucratic nexus.
The fans have been undone by the BCCI, yet again, but chants of “Sachin Sachin” just refuse to die down on Sachin Tendulkar’s home stretch.
