A Malayalam magazine, Grihalakshmi, has unveiled its cover in which Gilu Joseph, a model, poet and writer, can be seen breastfeeding her baby, launching a campaign challenging patriarchy.

One of Kerala's top magazines, Grihalakshmi’s cover shows a woman smiling into the camera as her baby suckles on her breast.

In a society where breastfeeding is sexualised, initiating a debate is a bold move but Gilu Joseph says she had no problem taking on this project.

She says in the cover story,“Whatever criticism this picture elicits, I will celebrate happily, as it is for all the mothers who want to breastfeed openly,” She was quoted as saying.

However, it’s a long way before discussion on breastfeeding reaches the same level as menstruation did after ‘Padman.’ Gilu told the leading Malayalam daily that her family does not approve of it.

But she still stuck to the campaign. There’s nothing to be afraid of or embarrassed about, she said in an interview.

However, it sparked another debate. A Twitter user wrote, “A breast feeding woman is on the cover of Grihalakshmi, one of the three best-selling women’s magazines in Kerala, albeit with sindoor on her head. Make of it what you want to make of it.”
