Odisha, Andhra Pradesh Prepare to Face Heavy Rains, Cyclone Alert Issued
The India Meteorological Department has issued a cyclone warning for both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with cyclonic storm 'Roanu' stationed just 120 km away from Gopalpur.
Heavy rains lashed both the states and the surface winds are expected to reach speeds of 100 km in the next 24 hours under the impact of Cyclone Roanu.
The MeT office also predicted heavy to very heavy rain at a few places over coastal Odisha, where 12 districts are on alert, and at one or two places over interior Odisha during next 48 hours.
Sea condition is very likely to be rough to very rough and fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea along and off Odisha, Andhra and Tamil Nadu coasts.
Chief Ministers of both the states have asked authorities to remain on alert.
"Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed all departments to remain alert to face the eventuality likely to be caused due to Cyclone Roanu. The districts have been told to keep foodstuff and other essential materials ready," chief secretary A P Padhi said reporters after chief minister Naveen Patnaik reviewed the cyclone preparedness.
Leave of all government officials in the state have been canceled on May 20 and May 21 and it may be extended depending on the situation.
The cyclonic storm is expected to cause damage to thatched huts, minor damage to power and communication lines due to the breaking of branches and major damage to kutcha and minor damage to pucca roads over coastal Odisha.
10 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire service personnel have been kept ready to deployed if required.
