8 Phera Trend All the Rage in Haryana to End Female Feticide
In an attempt to end gender discrimination and female feticide in Haryana, a couple on Monday took an extra “phera” around the fire, breaking the traditional seven rounds custom.
The seven phera ritual is becoming a passé in the state since 2008 when Shyam Sunder, a government employee from Bhiwani started a crusade against female feticide and persuaded couples to complete the eighth phera around the fire.
The latest instance of the eight phera trend was seen in Ahirika village of Jind district where a young couple broke all conventions to complete eight rounds of the fire, pledging not to indulge in female feticide and gender discrimination.
Interestingly, the newlywed couple was not alone in this endeavour. Everyone present on the occasion took a pledge to end female feticide along with the couple.
Early this month, 5 sisters in Jind took a similar step when they completed 8 rounds of the holy fire along with their grooms to fight against dowry, female feticide and other social evils. The initiative was taken in the wake of the dropping sex ratio in the state owing to pre-natal sex determination.
