Heart Transplant Done On Mumbai Patient
A Mumbai patient got a new lease of life as the heart of a 54 year old donor from Surat was sent to save him. Six other patients also gained from the other organs of the donor which were transported during one a half hours.
The Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC) in Mumbai performed its 13th heart transplant on 24th May after a beating heart was flown from Surat to Mumbai for a 53 year old patient through a green corridor. The man was waiting for a donor since the last two months and the transplant was a boost to his life.
The donor died on account of head injuries sustained via a road accident at Surat’s Mahavir hospital. However, his family spread happiness to six patients by deciding to donate several organs of his body like kidneys, heart and corneas. A team of experts went to Surat, collected the heart and returned through a planned green corridor.
The donor’s heart was retrieved from the hospital by 11:35 A.M. and taken to Surat airport within a short time period of 13 minutes. A chartered flight took it to Mumbai by 12:33 P.M.
Doctors have said that the 53 year old patient who received the heart was in a very uncomfortable position earlier. His condition was fast deteriorating and it was considered essential to conduct a transplant surgery on him. Currently, his condition is estimated to be much better and he has been kept under observation for the next 48 hours.
Doctors have lauded people who are ready to donate organs and save others’ lives. However, many patients who donate kidney and liver seem uncomfortable to donate heart. In such a scenario, NGOs work round the clock to counsel families of brain dead patients to change their decision and think of the larger picture.
