A 22-year-old Muslim woman Suhana Sayeed recently participated in a singing reality TV show in a regional Television channel. Little did she know her performance was to become a national sensation overnight.
For the said competition for the show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ on Zee Kannada, Suhana chose to sing a devotional Hindu song. Sayyed was seen sporting a colourful hijab, sticking to the roots of her Islamic tradition for her auditions. Singing precisely for about 100 seconds, the judges were left awestruck with her performance.
“By singing a Hindu devotional song you've become the symbol of unity. Music is a medium which unites people and differences disappear,” stated one of the judges while praising her performance.
A said group of radical Islamists however decided to troll the young girl for not just choosing to sing a devotional song of another religion, but for singing in front of men as well. A facebook page by the name ‘Mangalore Muslims’ ran a series of hate comments on social media.
“Suhana you have tarnished the Muslim Community by singing in front of men. Do not feel that you have achieved a great feat; people who learn to recite Quran in 6 months have achieved more. Your parents have encouraged you to show your beauty to other men, they will not go to heaven because of you. Please give up the pardah that you are wearing as you don’t respect it,” read one of the many shameful posts.
Ever since the posts went viral, mass public have come upfront in favour of Suhana supporting and appreciating her bold move. Music seems to have really united men of different religions in the case of Suhana this time!
