Jaipur: For a common man, financial crunch or the lure of saving some extra bucks could, for once, be justified as reasons to evade tax; but what does one say about millionaires, who live and run profit-making businesses in posh colonies, but do not pay taxes?
A confidential government report reveals that businessmen, builders, owners of malls and multiplexes and rich residents have not paid the urban development (UD) tax to Jaipur Municipal Corporation for almost three years.
Most of these defaulters live and have established business houses posh areas like Vaishali Nagar, Chitrakoot Colony, Civil Lines, C-Scheme and MI Road of Civil Line zone. According to the report, these tax evaders owe around Rs44 crores as UD tax.
This figure is more than 25% of the estimated Rs171 crore UD tax collected in Jaipur over the past three years.
Similarly, tax evading millionaires also abound areas like Raja Park, Tilak Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Bajaj Nagar and Bapu Nagar of Modi Dungari zone.
These evaders are businessmen, shopkeepers and well-off residents who owe Rs27 crore as UD taxes to the civic body. The tax amount, though comparatively less than that of Civil Line zone, it accounts for 15% of city's entire UD tax.
Interestingly, the tax dues of each of these evaders are more than Rs10 lakh.
Accepting that these defaulters have been escaping the tax net by using their social and monetary influence, JMC revenue commissioner KG Goyal said, "All these defaulters are well-to-do businessmen, residents and owners of showroom and malls. They have been not been paying their taxes for a long time. That is the reason why we are targeting posh colonies and markets in Civil Lines and Moti Dungari zones. These two zones can together help us gather more than Rs70 crores revenue."
The civic body has also chalked another strategy for defaulters also owe the civic body Rsone to 10 lakh.
Around 1,045 defaulters fall under this category and civic body can generate Rs25 crore from them.
"Interestingly, around 400 defaulters out of 1,045 in the second category also live in Civil Lines and Moti Dungari zones. So it is clear that posh colonies house most defaulters," a source said.
